You can skimp on birthday balloons or birthday party supplies but you can't get by without birthday cakes for kids!
This is a small sample of birthday cake decorating. You can find more birthday cake ideas and decorating supplies at .
A round or rectangular cake with a cake topper would be the easiest type of cake to make. Bake the cake, frost it and set the cake topper in place.
If you have time and feel extra creative, you can try using a shaped cake pan instead. Some of the cake pans they've come out with are really cute. Most of the shape cakes come with instructions for piping on the frosting using a star tip but you can frost the cake with a spatula or bread knife. Piping stars onto a cake takes time!
Be sure to save room on the birthday cake for candles. Kids love blowing out the candles on a cake, especially if it's their own birthday cake.
Candles do not have to be set close together, you can tuck them in between pieces of the cake toppers.
