A scary yet fun pumpkin that you can easily do.
Have you ever tried making a curved line in your pumpkin while using a steak knife? It's not easy to do especially if you are trying to make detailed curves. The best tools for making detailed cut outs are the jigsaw blade tools shown here.
Drills and jigsaw blades have opened up the possibilities of creating some very unique designs for your pumpkins.
Here are some sample pumpkin eyes for you to use.
The easiest way is to buy a book of pumpkin patterns. They are available right before Halloween and have some great ideas in them. I have used them a couple of times and find there are some great ones out there.
But, I like to be different so my favorite books for finding patterns to use are coloring books. You can buy these inexpensively and they're packed full of easy to use patterns.
With the coloring book you can color in the sections to make sure each area is attached somewhere.
While coloring the picture, if you see an area that isn't attached you can add lines to attach it. (It's a little to hard to add back a piece of the pumpkin after it has been cut away!)
This cat pumpkin is very cool, a simple clean design that is easy to carve.
This pumpkin will need to be cut fairly close to Halloween.
The neck area will start rotting/wilting first causing the head to fall over if it's cut too early.
Notice the slit eyes? Those should be cut first while there is still supporting tissue around it.
Trace over the design using an ink pen. (This allows you to see what area you have finished tracing.)
Remove the pattern. If you have trouble seeing where your lines are you can dust the surface with baby powder or flour to make the lines stand out.
I like to mark the areas that need to be cut out so I don't inadvertently cut away the wrong sections! Just put an X in the spots that need to go.
Start in the center of the design and work you way outward. Drill holes along the pattern line every so often but especially at the corners. This allows you to ease the pieces out of the pumpkin and allows you to turn the corners nicely.
When using the jigsaw blades just saw back and forth aiming the blade in at a 90 degree angle.
