Traditional candles for birthday cakes are long and narrow. You match the number with the birthday persons age.

While traditions are great, every once in a while it is fun to spice things up a little bit and try something new.

Traditional

birthday candles Traditional ones come in a variety of styles.
Some are solid colored, some come in strips and some even come spotted.
You can find thin ones and thick ones, tall ones and short ones.
There are even Trick ones that look very similiar to traditional ones except they stay light back up after getting blown out.

Holders are used to catch the wax to keep it from getting on the cake, but they don't have to be used.
You can get more than one use from them. Don't toss them out after one party, use them for four or five.

Numbered

number candles Numbers can be used singularly or combined to create any age. Some are plain while the majority have some coloring and small designs on them.

If you look at the photo closely you can see that numbers three and four have little nibs on the bottom of them. This is to anchor the number into the cake.
For the number two, it can be stuck into the cake without support, but would be better to secure it using a blob of frosting.

Shaped or Molded

Shapes can be three dimensional, flat-backed or even geometrical zig zag candles . This is where the fun really starts happening. New shapes like sports balls, three dimensional animals, magicians hats, cartoon characters, holiday decor and more are hitting the markets every year.
